I sometimes hear my students say,"I hate myself for not being able to do this today!". Sometimes I would jokingly congratulate them. Because they have just found things they can work on for the next few days/months/years. Yoga is a life long practice. Everyday is different. Your mood, body, thoughts and body feels different every day! The practice of self-study (Svadiyaya) will make you understand how to listen to your body and control your body more over time. That, to me is the practice of yoga. It is a practice to learn about yourself, your body and you! Namasté, Trev Neo "I'm not flexible enough for yoga" is what I hear from people all the time. I would tell them jokingly "if everyone is born flexible, I would be out of job!" Some people are born flexible because they do not naturally hold on to any tension in their body. It also means that their muscles do not get as tight as others even as we move through our day to day activities. Our body tenses up based on how we stand, walk, move or even think. The way to free ourselves from muscular tightness, back, shoulder and neck pain is by watching yourself and having more awareness of your body and putting your muscles in a relaxed state when they are not suppose to be working. That, to me is the practice of yoga. It is a practice to learn about yourself, your body and you! Namasté, Trev Neo "I'm too old for yoga!" I always tell my students, "Start moving before you can't move anymore. You don't want to be a burden to your children or other people as you age". The practice of yoga teaches us to take care of ourselves before others. By keeping yourself active, you are able to lead a more fulfilling life! Yoga posture (asana) practice would be slightly more challenging in the beginning especially if you have more years of habits to break away from, but it is still better to start NOW than never. Start moving, live a fulfilling life! That, to me is the practice of yoga. It is a practice to learn about yourself, your body and you! Namasté, Trev Neo Since ancient times people have been trying to get more flexible. We understand from many ancient text discovered that good martial artists require a certain amount of flexibility to move with nimbleness, agility. That is also a principle shared among all dancers, athletes and gymnasts. Having flexibility maximizes our bodies to it's fullest potential, it keeps our muscles supple, bones dense and joints mobile as we age with grace. That, to me is the practice of yoga. It is a practice to learn about yourself, your body and you! Namasté, Trev Neo |
